Macroscopic and microscopic evaluation of flapless alveolar perforations on experimental tooth movement

Artigo Original

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate a flapless surgical technique as an alternative to traditional alveolar corticotomy used to accelerate orthodontic tooth movement (OTM). Methods: To induce OTM in Wistar rats, 40 cN of orthodontic force were applied to the maxillary left first molars. Forty rats were distributed into control groups (CG1, CG3, CG7 and CG14) and experimental groups (n = 5), in which alveolar perforations were made using a spear-shaped guide bur (EG1, EG3, EG7, EG14). Euthanasia dates were set at 1, 3, 7 and 14 days, respectively, after tooth movement began. The...

To William Proffit, a Brazilian farewell

Since its first edition in 1996, the DPJO has been publishing an interview with professionals who have significantly contributed to our area. Our purpose is to create a permanent record of these personalities. The interview with Dr. William Proffit began its preparation in July, but unfortunately the questions that were carefully prepared by our interviewers were never answered. On the morning of September 30th, 2018, Dr. William Proffit passed away and the orthodontic world was in mourning.

orthodontics highlights

Orthodontically induced inflammatory root resorption is a common unwanted side effect when performing orthodontic tooth movement. Genetic characteristics, biological factors and orthodontic treatment techniques can affect the degree and amount of root resorption. Mechanical factors in orthodontic treatment can be controlled by the clinician. These include the duration of force application, the amount of force applied and the type of orthodontic force. There is agreement in the literature...

Premaxilla: up to which age it remains separated from the maxilla by a suture, how often it occurs in children and adults, and possible clinical and therapeutic implications: Study of 1,138 human skulls

Objective: To evaluate topographic and temporal aspects of premaxillary bone and premaxillary-maxillary suture, since they are fundamental anatomical elements little explored clinically. Methods: 1,138 human dry skulls were evaluated, of which 116 (10.19%) of the specimens were children, and 1,022 (89.81%) were adults. The skulls were photographed and the percentage of premaxillary-maxillary suture opening was determined. Subsequently the data were tabulated and submitted to statistical...

An interview with Jeffrey Okeson

It was with great joy that I accepted the invitation from the Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics to coordinate an interview with Dr. Jeffrey Okeson. I have known Dr. Okeson for over 14 years. All started when I had the fantastic opportunity to be one of his residents for 3 years, and ever since, he has been my mentor and my friend. Dr. Jeffrey Okeson, despite of being a very famous and tremendously talented professional, continues to be an extremely nice and simple person. Due to these and...

Interdisciplinary planning as a landmark for treatment: Case report with a 2-years follow-up

Case report: young adult woman with esthetic complaints regarding her smile and frontal teeth aspect. At first glance, the problem seemed to be only the shape of the lateral upper incisors and a small diastema between the central incisors. The diagnosis shared between the orthodontist and the prosthetist led us to consider some other important aspects, such as the deep bite, the teeth inclination and the lips support. All these findings led us to consider that the right way to improve the...

Facial asymmetry: virtual planning to optimize treatment predictability and aesthetic results

Facial asymmetry is a condition that compromises function and social interactions and, consequently, the quality of life. Orthodontic-surgical treatment may be indicated to achieve a stable occlusion and significant improvement in facial aesthetics. The virtual planning of the maxillary, mandibular and chin movements can be done prior to surgery. These movements can be successfully performed with the use of prototyped guides obtained from virtual planning. The aim of this article is to show...
